Making Furniture – Customizing in Photoshop

This is a section of the tutorial Making Furniture

To create your own sofa, we have provided you with 3 textures options.

When it comes to create a new texture for your sofa, we encourage you to try different colors using as a base one of the 3 textures above.

Here are some textures created from the previous ones that can inspire you to create your new sofa’s texture.

As you can see, the possible combinations are endless! You just need to allow your creativity take control.

Let’s start!

Click on Open or select one to open the chosen texture in Photoshop.

The easiest way to change the color of a texture is to make a new layer.

Click the Create a new layer button in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

To ensure you see everything correctly, check that the RGB Mode is activated. To do so, go to the top menu and click on Image ➞ Mode ➞ RGB Color.


Now that a new layer has been created, you need to fill the layer with a color.

  1. Choose a Foreground Color.

    In this case, the current Foreground Color is black. When you click on it, a new window opens and a pallet of colors is displayed.
  2. Let’s choose a color for your sofa.

    In this tutorial we are going to choose an IMVU purple.

    We encourage you to try different colors and select the one that fits best with your style.

    IMVU does not allow duplicate products to be sold in its Catalog.

    Once you have decided which color are you going to use to decorate your sofa, click OK.

  3. The Foreground Color has changed from black to the chosen color. In this case, it has changed from black to purple.

    To fill the layer with the chosen color, select it, and then select the Paint Bucket Tool in the toolbar

    The Paint Bucket Tool is grouped with the Gradient Tool in the toolbar. If you cannot find it, click and hold the Gradient Tool to access it.

  4. Move the mouse over the texture and click on it.

  5. The color of the layer has changed from transparent to the chosen color. In this case, it has changed from transparent to purple.

  6. It is necessary to change the Blend Mode (Layers tab) to see the changes on the texture.

    To do so, click on it to change its value from Normal to Color.

    Selecting a blend mode changes the appearance of the layer or image, based on the layer or layers beneath it.

    CONGRATULATIONS! You have created a new texture for your sofa.
  7. Your sofa texture is ready to be saved!

    • Save the changes by going to the top menu and clicking on File ➞ Save As …
    • Select the folder where you want to save the texture, name the texture, and click on Format.
    • A window pops up.
    • Select JPEG and click on the Save button.

  8. A new window pops up.

    Click OK.

The new texture has been saved in your chosen folder.
