Making Furniture – Customizing in GIMP

Customize in GIMP

To create your own sofa, we have provided you with 3 textures options.

When it comes to create a new texture for your sofa, we encourage you to try different colors using as a base one of the 3 textures above.

Here are some textures created from the previous ones that can inspire you to create your new sofa’s texture.

As you can see, the possible combinations are endless! You just need to allow your creativity take control.

Let’s start!

  • Open your texture file in Gimp by clicking on File ➞ Open.
  • Go to the folder where you have saved the texture and open the file that contains it.

The easiest way to change the color of a texture is to make a new layer.

To do so, look for the toolbar on the right bottom corner of the screen and click the first button .

A new window opens to set the attributes of the layer.

Click OK.

To ensure you see everything correctly, check that the RGB Mode is activated. To do so, go to the top menu and click on Image ➞ Mode ➞ RGB.


Now that a new layer has been created, you need to fill the layer with a color.

  1. Change the Background Color by clicking on the background icon.

    In this case, the current Background Color is white. When you click on it, a new window opens and a pallet of colors is displayed.

  2. Let’s choose a color for your sofa.

    In this tutorial we are going to choose an IMVU purple.

    We encourage you to try different colors and select the one that fits best with your style.

    IMVU does not allow duplicate products to be sold in its Catalog.

    Once you have decided which color are you going to use to decorate your sofa, click OK.

  3. The Background Color has changed from white to the chosen color. In this case, it has changed from white to purple.

  4. To fill the layer with the chosen color, select the Bucket Fill Tool on the left toolbox.

    Once it is selected, the shape of the cursor changes.

  5. Move the mouse over the texture and click on it.

  6. The color of the layer has changed from transparent to the chosen color. In this case, it has changed from transparent to purple.

  7. It is necessary to change the Layer Mode (Layers Tab) to see the changes on your texture.

    To do so, click on Mode to change its value to HSL Color.

    Selecting a layer mode changes the appearance of the layer or image, based on the layer or layers beneath it.

  8. CONGRATULATIONS! You have created a new texture for your sofa.

  9. Your sofa texture is ready to be saved!

    • Save the changes by going to the top menu and click on File ➞ Export As …
    • Select the folder where you want to save the texture, name it, and click on Select File Type (By Extension).

  10. Select the JPEG image option and click on Export.

  11. A new window appears. Click on Export.

 

The new texture has been saved in your chosen folder.
