Making a Shirt – Customize in Gimp

3.1. Customize in Gimp

  • Open your texture file in Gimp by clicking on File ➞ Open.
  • Go to the folder where you have saved the textures and open the file that contains the front texture of the T-shirt.

The easiest way to change the color of this texture is to make a new layer.

To do so, look for the toolbar on the right bottom corner of the screen and click the first button .

A new window opens to set the attributes of the layer.

Click OK.

To ensure you see everything correctly, check that the RGB Mode is activated. To do so, go to the top menu and click on Image ➞ Mode ➞ RGB.


Now that a new layer has been created, you need to fill the layer with a color.

    1. Change the Background Color by clicking on the background icon.

      In this case, your current background color is white. When you click on it, a new window opens and a pallet of colors is displayed.

    2. In this tutorial we are going to choose an IMVU purple.

      We encourage you to try different colors and select the one that fits best with your style.

      The color selected appears on Current.

      To keep the color for future use, click on the button next to Current.

Another way to keep the same color on all textures is using the number that appears in the HTML Notation field.

  • Once you have decided which color are you going to use for your T-shirt, click OK.

  • The Background Color has changed from white to the chosen color. In this case, it has changed from white to purple.

  • To fill the layer with the chosen color, select the Bucket Fill Tool on the left toolbar.

 

Once it is selected, the shape of the cursor changes.

  1. Move the mouse over the T-shirt and click on it.

  2. The color of the layer has changed from transparent to purple.

  3. It is necessary to change the Layer Mode (Layers Tab) to see the changes on your texture.

    To do so, click on Mode to change its value to HSL Color.

    Selecting a layer mode changes the appearance of the layer or image, based on the layer or layers beneath it.

  4. CONGRATULATIONS! The front of your T-shirt has a new look.

    • Save the changes by going to the top menu and click on File ➞ Export As …
    • Select the folder where you want to save the texture, name it, and click on Select File Type (By Extension).

  5. Select the JPEG image option and click on Export.

  6. A new window appears. Click on Export.

    The new texture has been saved in your chosen folder.
